A Tesco Mobile iPhone unlock begins by checking whether there is a carrier restriction at all. Tesco Mobile says all its Pay Monthly phones are unlocked and its help page says its handsets are now unlocked, but it also describes a free request for a Tesco-supplied phone that is still locked. Apple’s Network Provider Lock field separates that carrier-lock question from a SIM, account, activation or management problem. Read Tesco Mobile’s official unlock guidance. Read Apple’s iPhone unlock instructions.
Key Takeaways
- Tesco Mobile says all its Pay Monthly phones are unlocked and its unlock page says its handsets are now unlocked; verify the individual iPhone before requesting work.
- In Settings, General, About, Apple says No SIM restrictions beside Network Provider Lock means the iPhone reports no carrier restriction.
- Tesco Mobile says it does not charge to unlock its Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go phones and provides an online request for an eligible Tesco-locked device.
- Tesco says it cannot unlock a phone locked to another network or a device it did not supply.
- A SIM PIN or PUK deals with the SIM line, not the iPhone’s carrier lock; Activation Lock and MDM or supervision are separate controls.
Is a Tesco Mobile iPhone already unlocked?
Tesco Mobile’s current Pay Monthly page says all Tesco Mobile Pay Monthly phones are unlocked, and its SIM-free page says SIM-free phones are unlocked. Ofcom’s UK rule banning mobile companies from selling locked handsets took effect on 17 December 2021. That rule and Tesco’s current statements reduce the likelihood that a recent UK Tesco purchase needs a carrier unlock, but they do not prove the status of a particular used, imported, repaired or older iPhone. Check the device itself. See Tesco Mobile’s current Pay Monthly statement. See Tesco Mobile’s SIM-free statement. Read Ofcom’s locked-handset rule.
| Tesco iPhone history | What the published guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Current Tesco Mobile Pay Monthly purchase | Tesco says all Pay Monthly phones are unlocked | Check Network Provider Lock and destination-provider compatibility |
| Tesco Mobile SIM-free purchase | Tesco says SIM-free phones are unlocked | Check the individual iPhone and the destination provider’s service requirements |
| Older Tesco-supplied iPhone | A carrier restriction may still be present on a particular device | Use Tesco’s official request only if the device reports a Tesco lock |
| Second-hand or refurbished iPhone | The seller’s SIM does not establish the current device history | Check the supplier, device status and ownership history without posting sensitive identifiers |
| Phone supplied by another network | Tesco says it cannot unlock another network’s locked phone | Contact the provider that controls the carrier restriction |
How to check a Tesco Mobile iPhone
- Open Settings, tap General, then About.
- Find Network Provider Lock. Some iOS versions or regions may use the label Carrier Lock.
- If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple says the iPhone reports no carrier restriction. Do not request another carrier unlock on that basis.
- If it shows a lock, note the exact wording and use device details only in Tesco’s official request form; never post a full device identifier publicly.
- Use purchase, account and repair records to check whether Tesco Mobile UK supplied this particular iPhone.
- A compatible active non-Tesco SIM or eSIM can test service, but a failed test can also reflect the plan, SIM or eSIM, carrier settings, coverage or other compatibility conditions.
Apple says only the current network provider can unlock an iPhone. Apple’s on-device check is evidence about the carrier-lock field, not a promise that a destination network will provide service. If the device says No SIM restrictions but still shows SOS, No Service or an invalid-SIM alert, check the destination provider’s plan and setup before treating it as a carrier-lock problem. Follow Apple’s current UK unlock instructions. Read Apple’s invalid-SIM troubleshooting.
Tesco Mobile UK and Tesco Mobile Ireland use different support sites and carrier records. This guide covers the UK provider at tescomobile.com, not tescomobile.ie.
Use Tesco Mobile’s official request
- Confirm that the iPhone shows a carrier lock and that Tesco Mobile UK supplied the device.
- Use only the current device and account details requested by Tesco’s official form; do not send passwords, SIM PINs, PUKs or full identifiers to a public service.
- Submit the request through Tesco Mobile’s official help page, not through an unverified form or intermediary.
- For an older Pay As You Go device, follow Tesco’s current active-number instructions before submitting the request if they apply to that device.
- Keep the request reference and the device details you submitted so you can ask Tesco about the same case.
- After Tesco confirms its carrier-side action, follow the iPhone-specific activation steps rather than entering a generic code into a SIM PIN, PUK or passcode prompt.
- Insert or activate another provider’s compatible SIM or eSIM and then recheck Network Provider Lock and service.
Tesco Mobile’s current generic unlock page says the request is free and that it will text a code and a link within seven days. That is Tesco’s published guidance for its request flow, not a guarantee of completion or a universal iPhone deadline. Apple describes iPhone unlocking as provider authorization followed by activation, so do not assume that an iPhone needs a typed network code. Open Tesco Mobile’s official request guidance. See Apple’s provider-authorization steps.
Older Tesco Pay As You Go phones
Tesco’s current page says that if a locked handset was purchased, a Pay As You Go SIM with an active number may be needed before the online request. Tesco defines an active number there as one that has made a chargeable call. This condition is tied to its published legacy locked-handset flow; it does not mean every current Tesco iPhone must be activated that way.
When Tesco Mobile is not the right provider
Tesco says it cannot unlock phones locked to another network or devices it did not supply. If the iPhone came from O2, EE, Three, Vodafone or an overseas provider, a Tesco SIM does not transfer control of the carrier lock to Tesco. Identify the supplying provider before submitting any request. Read Tesco’s guidance for a phone from another network. Find the carrier controlling an iPhone lock.
Tesco unlock, PUK and passcode are different
| Prompt or status | What is restricted | Correct owner or route |
|---|---|---|
| Network Provider Lock: SIM locked | Use of another carrier | The provider that controls the carrier lock; Tesco only for an eligible Tesco lock |
| No SIM restrictions | No carrier restriction is reported by the iPhone | The destination provider still controls plan and service setup |
| SIM PIN or PUK | One SIM or eSIM line | The carrier that issued that line |
| Forgotten passcode | Access to the iPhone and its local data | Apple’s documented passcode-reset process |
| iPhone Locked to Owner | Activation Lock and Apple Account ownership | The legitimate owner, organization or Apple’s documented support route |
| Supervision or MDM profile | Organization-applied settings and restrictions | The owning organization or its administrator |
| Network-barred status | Network acceptance of the device | The reporting provider or legitimate account route; a carrier unlock is not a blacklist-removal promise |
Activation Lock and MDM need an ownership check
Activation Lock is linked to Find My and the previous Apple Account. Apple says a used iPhone showing iPhone Locked to Owner must not be taken over until the previous owner removes it, or an eligible owner starts Apple’s documented support route with proof of purchase. A carrier unlock does not remove Activation Lock. Read Apple’s Activation Lock guidance. Read Apple’s Activation Lock removal options.
MDM is device management, not a SIM or carrier lock. Apple says a supervised iPhone can show a supervision message in Settings and can have organization profiles, restrictions or configurations. Check Settings, General, VPN & Device Management and contact the owning organization or administrator; do not treat a Tesco unlock request as an MDM-removal route. See Apple’s supervised-device guidance.
Tesco Mobile provides a separate PUK route for a blocked SIM. Its current guidance says three incorrect SIM PIN entries can block the SIM, and ten incorrect PUK entries can permanently block that SIM. A PUK does not change Network Provider Lock, remove Activation Lock or remove an MDM profile. See Tesco Mobile’s PUK guidance.
Finish and verify the Tesco iPhone unlock
After the network provider confirms its change, Apple says to insert a SIM from another provider and let the iPhone activate. If no other SIM is available, Apple documents backing up, erasing and restoring the iPhone. Erasing before provider authorization cannot make an ineligible device eligible, and it should not be used as a diagnostic shortcut. Follow Apple’s activation steps after authorization.
| Result after the request | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM restrictions and new service works | The carrier lock appears cleared and the line activated | Keep Tesco’s confirmation and check the service terms |
| No SIM restrictions but SOS or No Service | Carrier lock is not the only possible blocker | Check the destination plan, SIM or eSIM, carrier settings, coverage and compatibility |
| SIM locked remains | The controlling provider or submitted device details may be different from expected | Return to Tesco or the controlling provider with the exact wording and case reference |
| SIM Not Supported | Activation still rejects the line | Recheck provider authorization and destination compatibility |
| PUK requested | The SIM is blocked | Contact the carrier that issued the SIM |
| iPhone Locked to Owner or a supervision message | An ownership or organization-management control remains | Stop and use the legitimate owner or organization route |
When No SIM restrictions is already present, focus on the destination carrier and device status rather than paying for another carrier-unlock request. An unlocked status does not by itself confirm a plan, coverage, compatibility or ownership issue is resolved. Troubleshoot an unlocked iPhone with no service. Understand what a network unlock changes.
Where a third-party service fits
A third-party service cannot be treated as the authority for Tesco’s device record. It cannot be assumed to remove a carrier lock, a valid network bar, Activation Lock or an MDM profile merely because it accepts an IMEI or says a request was submitted. Verify the iPhone’s status yourself and do not share passwords, PINs, PUKs or full device identifiers publicly.
Because Tesco Mobile provides a free official route for eligible Tesco-locked devices, compare any paid offer with that route first. Ask what eligibility is being checked, what happens if the provider refuses the request and what evidence will show completion. Treat completion as the iPhone reporting No SIM restrictions, not as a payment receipt or a submitted-status message. Check an IMEI unlock service before paying.
