A Three UK iPhone unlock is first a status check, not proof that a new request is needed. Three’s official article, published in 2017, says it stopped selling locked phones on 1 January 2014 and says older Three phones could be unlocked free in a store. That is historical guidance, not a current approval for a particular device. A used, imported or replacement iPhone can have a different history, so start with Apple’s on-device status instead of assuming the current SIM identifies the locking network. Read Three’s official 2017 unlocked-phone article. Check Apple’s current iPhone unlock instructions.
Key Takeaways
- Three’s 2017 article says it stopped selling locked phones on 1 January 2014; do not treat that dated statement as a device-specific approval.
- Apple says No SIM restrictions beside Network Provider Lock is the iPhone’s reported unlocked status.
- For an older Three handset, use Three’s current public support route to ask what review is available; the older article does not establish today’s eligibility, fee or timing.
- A Three brand name does not identify the country or provider record by itself. Use the sales country, paperwork and device history.
- Carrier Lock is separate from a SIM PIN or PUK, screen passcode, Activation Lock and MDM. This guide does not determine blacklist, finance or warranty status.
Is a Three UK iPhone already unlocked?
For a phone bought directly from Three UK in 2014 or later, Three’s official 2017 article says it stopped selling locked phones from 1 January 2014. Ofcom’s rule took effect on 17 December 2021 and says mobile companies are banned from selling locked handsets to customers. Neither source is a device-specific result, and a used, imported or replacement iPhone still needs the Apple status check. Read Three’s dated statement. Read Ofcom’s locked-handset rule notice. See Apple’s status check.
| Device history | What the source or history indicates | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bought from Three UK in 2014 or later | Three’s 2017 article says phones sold from 1 January 2014 were unlocked | Check Network Provider Lock and keep the purchase history |
| Older Three UK handset | The dated article describes a free store route; current eligibility is not established here | Ask Three through its current public support route to review the device |
| Second-hand or refurbished iPhone | The seller’s SIM does not prove the phone’s origin or lock status | Check Apple’s status, supplier history and the provider that controls the record |
| Insurance or warranty replacement | Treat the replacement as a different device for status checking | Use the current device’s identifier and do not publish its full IMEI |
| Three Ireland or another country | The brand name alone does not identify the provider record | Use the sales country and the provider’s official route |
Do not contact Three UK just because a Three SIM is installed. The active service provider and the provider controlling Network Provider Lock may be different.
How to check a Three iPhone before seeking help
- Open Settings, tap General, then About.
- Find Network Provider Lock. Record the exact wording shown on the iPhone rather than relying on a search result or a seller’s description.
- If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple reports that the iPhone is unlocked. That does not by itself activate a plan or solve coverage, compatibility or eSIM issues.
- If the field shows a provider or another restriction, note the exact wording and copy the IMEI or IMEI2 from the same iPhone. Keep the full identifier private.
- Check the receipt, account, box and repair paperwork to distinguish Three UK from Three Ireland or another supplier.
- If the field is absent or the screen differs, do not infer the status. Use Apple’s current guidance and ask the relevant provider to identify the record.
Apple says it cannot unlock an iPhone for a different network provider. Only the current network provider can authorize the carrier unlock. Apple’s instructions also say to check the status after the provider confirms the request, so a submitted request or an IMEI report is not the same as a completed unlock. Follow Apple’s current UK carrier-unlock instructions.
Confirm Three UK, not Three Ireland
A Three brand name does not tell you which country or provider record controls a restriction. Use the original sales country, account paperwork and provider response. Three UK’s current public contact page lists live chat and phone support, but it does not by itself confirm unlock eligibility or completion. Use Three UK’s current public contact page.
What to do with an older locked Three iPhone
- Confirm About still reports a carrier restriction and gather evidence that Three UK supplied the phone. If another country or provider appears in the history, use that route instead.
- Collect the IMEI from the current device plus purchase or replacement evidence. Send it only through a trusted official support channel and do not publish it.
- Use Three’s current public support route and ask whether it can review a legacy carrier restriction. Do not assume a store, free service or particular response time from the dated article.
- Ask which device record and country were reviewed, and keep any case reference supplied by the provider.
- Wait for provider confirmation before erasing the iPhone or repeatedly swapping lines. An erase does not create a carrier unlock.
- After the provider confirms the unlock, follow Apple’s activation steps with a compatible SIM or eSIM from another provider.
- Return to Settings, General, About and verify No SIM restrictions, then test the destination line’s calls, messages and data.
Three’s official page published in 2017 says an older Three phone could be unlocked free in a Three store. Because that page is dated and does not establish current eligibility, confirm the current channel with Three before travelling or paying. The current contact page provides a support route, not a guarantee that a particular device will be accepted or unlocked. Read the dated Three guidance. Check Three’s current contact options.
Carrier Lock, SIM PIN, Activation Lock and MDM are different
| Message or symptom | What it controls | Correct route |
|---|---|---|
| Network Provider Lock does not say No SIM restrictions | The iPhone reports a carrier restriction | The current provider controlling the lock; use Apple’s carrier-unlock guidance |
| No SIM restrictions | Apple reports no carrier restriction | The destination provider for service or eSIM setup |
| SIM PIN or PUK prompt | Security on one SIM or eSIM line | The provider that issued that line; do not guess the code |
| Forgotten screen passcode | Access to local iPhone data | Apple’s documented passcode-reset process |
| iPhone Locked to Owner | Activation Lock and Apple Account ownership | The legitimate previous owner or Apple’s documented process |
| Remote Management or a management profile | Organization device-management settings, commands or restrictions | The organization or MDM administrator; this is not a carrier-unlock route |
| SOS or No Service | A service, plan, coverage or compatibility symptom after activation | The destination provider and device/plan checks |
Apple describes MDM as a device-management service that can send configurations, profiles and commands, including remote lock or wipe. Its enrollment and removal rules depend on how the organization enrolled the device, so contact the organization or MDM administrator. MDM is a different control from Network Provider Lock and is not removed by a carrier unlock. Read Apple’s device-management overview.
Finish the unlock with a SIM or eSIM
After the current network provider confirms the unlock, Apple says a different physical SIM can activate the iPhone, and it provides a separate eSIM setup route. If no other SIM is available, Apple documents backup, erase and restore steps. Those steps complete activation after approval; they do not create an unlock. Three’s SIM support pages explain Three SIM and eSIM setup, but they do not themselves establish carrier-unlock approval. See Apple’s post-approval activation guidance. See Three’s current SIM support hub.
| Result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM restrictions and service works | Apple reports no carrier restriction and the destination line is active | Keep the provider response and test record |
| No SIM restrictions but eSIM will not download | The carrier-lock field is not reporting a restriction | Ask the destination provider to check its eSIM setup, plan and compatibility |
| No SIM restrictions but SOS appears | The carrier-lock field is not reporting the cause of the service problem | Check the destination plan, coverage and compatibility |
| A carrier restriction remains after provider contact | The iPhone still reports a restriction | Ask the provider to confirm the current device and country record it reviewed |
| PUK requested | The SIM or eSIM line needs its issuer’s security process | Contact the line issuer and do not guess the PUK |
If the About screen already shows No SIM restrictions, a new unlock order cannot change that carrier-lock status. Troubleshoot the destination network, plan, coverage, compatibility or eSIM provisioning instead, and do not treat a blacklist, finance or warranty question as answered by this screen. Troubleshoot an unlocked iPhone with no service. Check whether an iPhone is unlocked four ways.
Where a third-party service fits
A third-party service may help organize device history or explain public routes, but it cannot authorize an iPhone carrier unlock. Treat an IMEI report, an order submission or a claimed approval as information until the provider has confirmed the result and the iPhone shows No SIM restrictions. No third-party result is verified in this article. See Apple’s completion check.
Three’s dated article says newer devices were sold unlocked and describes free help for older Three phones. Before paying any third party, ask it to identify Three UK specifically, explain why the official route is unsuitable and state what happens if it cannot complete the work. This guide makes no promise about price, timing, financing, warranty, blacklist removal or another provider accepting the device. Use the IMEI unlock service checklist.
